Differences in Pathogenesis-Related Protein Expression and Polyphenolic Compound Accumulation Reveal Insights into Tomato–Pythium aphanidermatum Interaction

Plant diseases significantly reduce crop yields, threatening food security and agricultural sustainability. Fungi are the most destructive type of phytopathogen, they responsible for major yield losses in some crucial crops grown across world. In this study, a fungus isolate was detected from infected tomato plants molecularly identified as Pythium aphanidermatum (GenBank accession number MW725032). This caused damping-off disease shown to be pathogenic. Moreover, expression five pathogenesis-related genes, namely PR-1, PR-2, PR-3, PR-4, PR-5, quantitatively evaluated under inoculation with P. aphanidermatum. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) showed that levels PR-5 genes went up at 5 days post-inoculation (dpi). PR-1 gene also increased variably, which reached its highest value 20 dpi, reported relative level 6.34-fold higher than control. At 15 PR-2 most, while noticeably dpi. On contrary, PR-4 decreased after inoculation, all time intervals. Regarding expression, data variable change different sample collection period.
